SUMMARY:Outlaw Backpacking: Cuchara Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to members only who have completed a qualifying hike and the waiver.  \n“Unwilling to wait for mankind to improve\, the outlaw lives as if that day were here.” — Tom Robbins \nSouth of the familiar routes and beyond the managed wilderness lies Cuchara Canyon. This is a quiet landscape of creek bottoms\, cottonwoods\, and long bends where the map loosens its grip and the days stretch out. \nThis will be a 3-day / 2-night outlaw-style backpacking trip\, built around movement\, presence\, and flexibility rather than milestones. We’ll walk into the canyon\, make a good camp\, and let the place tell us what comes next. \nNotes from the Edge \n\nMileage: Total mileage will land somewhere around 10–20 miles\, with plenty optional. We care about the line we choose\, not the distance.\nConditions: Expect off-season reality\, where badgers toilet: cool nights\, mud\, patchy snow\, open skies. The outlaw boat sails against the flow.\nWater: Available in the creek.\nCrew Size: Group size capped at 10. “All outlaws are photogenic” but only when crews stay small.\n\nThis is about living beyond the spirit of the everyday rules—slowing down\, choosing our own line\, and refusing to be a victim of the mundane.

SUMMARY:Slots\, Scrambles\, and Serious Consequences - Coyote Gulch+
DESCRIPTION:This event is open to members only who have completed a qualifying hike and the waiver. \nRequired actions before trip:\n1 – *Fill out waiver: https://forms.gle/71SPiqc4iyqDmD8Y7\n2 – *Complete a qualifying hike*.* Check the calendar regularly for upcoming opportunities. You will keep your place in line on the waitlist so long as you qualify within one month of the trip.\n3- Attend a pre-planning Google Hangout meeting one week before trip start date (will send invite via Google closer to).\n*including any 1+. \nThis is no casual stroll in the desert. It’s a Coyote Gulch backpacking adventure. \nAfter an eleven-hour drive from Colorado Springs\, we’ll backpack down a crack of a slot canyon. The route demands hands-on movement\, careful decision-making\, and a steady head as we climb out via a wall (those with fear of heights might not want to join this adventure)\, earning our exit one move at a time. \nThis route comes with serious consequences—exposure\, route-finding\, and terrain that doesn’t forgive complacency. It also comes with serious reward: towering rock\, silence broken only by breath and boots\, and the kind of earned confidence that only shows up after doing something hard. \nSome important things to consider before RSVPing for this trip. \n\nIt’s an 11-hour drive from Colorado Springs.\nWe will take the route that requires class 5 friction climbing – watch this video for info: https://youtu.be/pQgqSjP5zZA?t=296\nYou must carry out all waste (meaning – you have to use a wag bag or hold it).\nFires are prohibited. Stoves are allowed. Nights could be cold.\nPets are prohibited.\nWeather will likely range from 30 – 75 degrees.\n4WD recommended for Forty Mile Ridge Rd but we can figure something out if you don’t have it.\n\nLimited to 6 people. \nTotal Mileage: 12 – 14 miles with side quests.\nElevation: About 1700 with climb in and out of gulch. \nLeader Plan – everyone else can arrive Fri AM.\nWED PM – Leave COS\nTHURS – Get Permit (scope out rope situation at Jacob’s)\nFRI – Everyone Meets. Hike about 6 – 7 miles\, camp.\nSAT – Hike out 6 – 7 miles. Go to Peekaboo\, Spooky Slot Canyons and explore. Camp out on BLM land.\nSUN – Head home.\nNote: You can come out early or meet us in Escalante area on Friday at 8 AM.

You will keep your place in line on the waitlist so long as you qualify within one month of the trip.\nAttend a pre-trip virtual planning meeting about one week before trip start date.\n\nDuration: 2 days/1 night\nDistance: ~15 miles\, 1500′ elevation change\nGroup Size: 6 (we might increase to 8 if there is enough interest)\nDifficulty: Intermediate \nDescription \nJoin me for an early season overnight. This trip is a chance to ease into the season with a casual pace while still spending time in rugged terrain. \nOn Saturday afternoon\, we will hike in from the Bear Gulch Trailhead (use a GPS point from the CalTopo to find directions) at 1 PM\, heading north along the creek before selecting a camp (~4 miles). There will be opportunities to explore side creeks and do some fishing along the way or after setting camp. \nOn Sunday\, we will continue north into “The Tights\,” a beautiful canyon section. The trail shifts between faint game paths and stretches of old railroad bed\, and there are numerous creek crossings. This makes for a great opportunity to practice route finding in a supportive group setting. After exploring the canyon\, we will return the way we came (~10 miles). If time and energy allow\, we may continue south past the trailhead to explore more of the creek. \nThe overall elevation gain is gentle\, but the terrain can be challenging. Expect uneven footing and multiple creek crossings that may be knee deep depending on conditions. There is also plenty of cactus in this area\, so careful foot placement is important. \nThe road to the trailhead is rough and poorly graded. AWD or 4WD with decent clearance is strongly recommended. If you do not have a suitable vehicle\, we can help coordinate carpools. \nWe will hold a planning meeting about one week before the trip to confirm attendance\, review gear and conditions\, and answer any final questions.

SUMMARY:Qualifying Hike: Pancake Rocks
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE READ THIS WHOLE POST BEFORE RSVPing. \n\n\n\nIf you do not have micro spikes please invest in some now. They will be required to participate as we will not know the ice situation of the whole trail. \n\n\n\nThis is a qualifying hike to participate in upcoming backpacking events with Colorado Springs Backpackers (COSBP). If you have a dog you want to bring backpacking\, your dog must also qualify. Friendly\, well behaved\, leashed dogs welcome. If you have already qualified\, you are welcome to participate if you are interested in doing a conditioning hike. \n\n\n\nYou only have to complete a qualifying hike once unless it’s been more than 8 months since last participating in a COSBP trip or hike. Before being able to participate in this hike you must fill out a waiver –https://forms.gle/3DzXeRDJziLAZ8nJ7 \n\n\n\nWhat it takes to qualify:1 – Carry a full backpacking pack for the whole hike that weighs at least 24 pounds. I suggest you pack it as you would if you were actually backpacking. I DO NOT suggest carrying actual weights as it will be too unevenly distributed and awkward. We will weigh packs.2 – Finish the hike without any major problems.3 – You know and can communicate about when you need to take a break.4 – No pace requirement.5 – Good attitude – gets along well with people. \n\n\n\nHike Route:distance: 6.5mi elevation: 1\,692ftmap: https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/pancake-rocks–2https://caltopo.com/m/N5H6MG0 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
